Carrick sailor Ryan Seaton and boat partner Matt McGovern mean business.

The talented pair are set to compete in this year’s Olympic Games and as they gear up to take to the waters off the coast of Weymouth, they’ve set their sights on one thing and one thing only: bringing home a medal.

The Irish duo, who sail in the 49er class, secured their Olympic spot late last year, qualifying at the Sailing World Championships in Perth, Australia.

Their flair for the sport isn’t in doubt and they possess in abundance the one thing all elite sportsmen need to have in their locker to succeed: belief.

“We’re going there to get a medal. We’re not going there to make up the numbers,” said Seaton who cut a confident figure when the Times caught up with him at Carrickfergus Sailing Club this week.

“Our first goal was to qualify the country and get to the Olympics. At the World Championships all of the Olympic competitors were there and we finished as the sixth nation so we were very close on points to getting a medal. We are going to the Olympics to try and get a medal. We’re really in with a good chance,” the 22-year-old added.

“It’s all down to hard work; we didn’t really expect to be were we are at this stage because we have only been sailing together for four years and we’ve really made a vast improvement over the past two years.”

The 49er class is the fastest and most exciting of the Olympic sailing events, and it has taken enormous commitment from both men to make it to the top of their game.

“Having been training since I was 15, putting the hours in at the gym it was just a big relief to qualify for the games. It was really a dream come true. We’re so happy just to have qualified but we know there’s a lot of hard work still to be done.

“I suppose the 49er event would be seen as the formula one class of sailing. It’s the fastest boat in the Olympics and it’s the most modern boat as well, so, it attracts a lot of attention and it’s also good to watch. The boat can reach up to speeds of 30 miles per hour in the water, so it’s pretty exciting,” added Seaton

There has been intensive and rigorous training and fitness regimes along the way and the pair have also put their university studies on hold to focus their efforts on their Olympic dream.

“We’re part of the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland where we have strength and conditioning coaching and physio sessions. We are there four days a week and we have four sessions on the water so there’s not a day that goes by that we are not putting ourselves through our paces, really.

“The next few months are fitness-based and then we’ll get into more specific training with boat time and racing time as the Olympics draw closer,” the former Downshire pupil revealed.

Ryan has been sailing at the local club since he was a boy and its members are thrilled to see one of their own competing with the cream of the world’s best. But it’s only since 2008 that he has teamed up Bangor man McGovern and, as Seaton admitted, the duo click when they get together on a boat.

“Matt and I have been sailing together for four years now and we both get on well. We obviously have our ups and downs but were both quite open; if one of us isn’t pulling their weight we will say to each other.

“When I started sailing with Matt I always wanted someone who was going to give 100 per cent like myself and on the boat he’s brilliant. I really couldn’t ask for somebody better to sail with.”

And, for McGovern, the feeling is mutual. “Sailing with Ryan is great,” he said, “He’s has a great personality and that helps us off the boat when we’re travelling, but on the boat he is just a real fighter even when things aren’t looking good. He never gives up and that’s the kind of thing that I look for in a skipper. He’ll always go that extra mile to help me out.”

The pair were this week due to set off with the Irish team for a fitness camp in Fuerteventura before jetting off to New Zealand for a three-week sailing camp with the world’s number one and two 49er partnerships, Australia and New Zealand, respectively.

There’s a lot of work to be done between now and the games but, for local man Seaton, it would be a remarkable achievement if he was to earn the right to stand on an Olympic rostrum come the summer.

“Winning an Olympic medal would mean the world to me. It’s something that I have dreamed of. I just want to come home with a medal and be proud of it and show everyone what we achieved,” he said.
