Ever heard of Graphene?

1st September 2011

We hadn’t either, but apparently it’s the strongest material on Earth and scientists from universities in the UK say that they have found a way to use it to improve sensitivity and transmit data faster over fibre optic networks.

Graphene was discovered in 2004 and has been hailed as a “wonder material”, it is often used in photo-electrical systems but its superconductive properties mean that electrons can flow much faster than with previous technology.

It remains to be seen if this new technology will make it’s way into our domestic and commercial broadband systems anytime soon but any speed increase can only be a good thing.
