Remove info window from google maps embed

21st October 2011

Often now web designers are embedding google maps on websites to allow quick navigation to the customers premises.  Its a great feature and much quicker than having the design a custom map, the google engine will give directions to the premises too.

You can now change the shape and size of the google custom box but I’ve found recently that the larger google information window can obscure most of the map, especially on a small embedded window.  Here is the solution:

1.  Generate the code for your map from google maps in the usual way.

2. Look for this in the code &output=embed“></iframe>

3. Change it to &output=embed&iwloc=near”></iframe>

Job done, the map now just shows the little google placeholder, if the user click on this they can then enlarge the information box.
